Fools' Parade (Appalachian Echoes)

Authors: Davis Grubb and Thomas E. Douglass
Average review score:

Make way Bonnie and Clyde!! Author,Davis Grubb Rules!!
This Gangster Novel set in the mystical town of Glory West Virginia has had more than it's fair share of grinding corruption and poverty during the Great Depression. On April of 1935,3 men were released from the Glory Jail boarding a train but returning to Glory to the bank. They were carrying a satchel filled with $25,352 and 32 cents. That was Blood money for the corrupt bosses of that time. With an array of both good and evil characters, makes this an extrordinary eerie suspense novel in the same tradition of Davis Grubb's prior novel"The Night of the Hunter" which both books were made into movies. The movie classic"Fools Parade"1971 starring Jimmy Stewart,a young Kurt Russell (at the time rarely seen in a non-disney film) and George Kennedy has unfortunately never been released on video in the U S(maybe someday .... might carry it!)hopefully it might be released in the not so distant future! Meanwhile, enjoy the book!!Finally, thumbs way up for the late, great Moundsville-Clarksburg, West Virginia author" Davis Grubb" who has entertained millions with his captivating novels!!Good Show!!

A Fascinating Glimpse Into the Journey of Motherhood
Although I've never experienced the process of bringing a child into the world, I found this book both educational and fascinating. So many people fail to realize the myriad changes that come with the birth of a child--and before. I feel that many children would have a better start in life if more parents were aware of the magnitude of responsibility involved. Davis enumerates the joys--and trials of prospective motherhood in clear, unpretentious prose. I was especially enthralled by the birth of little Michelle at the end of the book. Having read all about her beginnings, I look forward to reading Davis's successive books to discover how this precious little girl turns out.

Fortune's Warriors: Private Armies and the New World Order
Published in Paperback by Douglas & McIntyre (May, 2002)
Author: James Davis
Average review score:

Outstanding book about a timely subject
Fortune's Warriors is an incredibly insightful look into a growing industry that will only increase in relevance with our world's uncertain future. The subject is former military veterans, most of them coming from Special Operations units of western countries, that hire themselves out to foreign goverments.

The general population, largely ignorant on the subject, would quickly label them as mercenaries, but for the first time I've ever seen in any book, the author takes a hard analytical look at exactly what that term really means in comparison to the images it conjures when formulating world opinion.

A mercenary could very well be a sociopathic criminal thrill seeker, looking for a way to satisfy a delusional urge. In this day and age, however, he's more likely to be a former professional soldier, helping to stabilize a region and protecting non-government aid organizations to distribute needed supplies and medical care to war torn areas of the world. The mercenary could very well be a professional soldier within a western military force, such as the French Foreign Legion. If anything, this book shows that the word mercenary does not have a cut and dried definition.

This particular industry ranges from companies that simply compile risk analysis reports on various areas of questionable stability, to former soldiers who train foreign militaries, all the way down to the Private Military Coporation, who will come in to fight your war for you, provided you are recognized in the international community as a legitmate goverment.

The book also talks about the troubled history that these security companies have with different parts of the UN, and how regulation and policy that might be set by the UN requires a closer look.

The book is full of real world examples, most of them taken from the tragic and war torn Sierra Leone. It describes how a South African based Private Military Company called Executive Outcomes was able to come in and assist the government in surpressing an extremely violent and brutal rebel movement. The rebels had tortured civilians, cutting off villager's limbs was almost a form of recreation for them, and EO managed to come in and restore order in a matter of weeks. The villagers welcomed them in the streets, and even the usually pacifist NGO workers had to acknowledge their positive presence. The true tragedy of the story lies in the protests made through the UN, and EO had to leave, which plunged the country right back into chaos.

In a more uncertain world where western militaries are spread more and more thin, this subject deserves much more attention then it recieves. In many cases, the men who are Fortune's Warriors could very well be their only hope.

Awsome N'Awlins Cooking
Being close to New Orleans, I have seen the author on local cooking shows. The Shrimp and Okra Gumbo in this book is one of the best ever..when I prepare it, as I do every year at Christmas, everyone wants the recipe. The other recipes are just as good..

The Frank Davis Seafood Notebook
Published in Hardcover by Pelican Pub Co (June, 1983)
Authors: Frank Davis and Paul Prudhomme
Average review score:

The Bible of Seafood Cookery!
Written as a textbook of sorts, entirely in narrative script, this book actually teaches you how to cook seafood as opposed to how to follow just one singular recipe. It is chock full of valuable information dealing with culinary procedures, use and application of spices, techniques for preparing everything from boiled blue crabs to beer-battered alligator, and the only complete listing of every single fish that swims the waters of the Northern Gulf of Mexico and how to cook them! But the recipes themselves are special--not only unique to the famed cuisine of the Crescent City but so simple to follow and easy to prepare, both for the novice cook as well as the professional chef. It is truly one of those books a serious cook interested in preparing seafood the proper way needs to have on his or her bookshelves, and it is certainly one of those books you'll feel compelled to read from cover to cover for pure entertainment and enrichment.

The Freewill Question.
Published in Textbook Binding by Prometheus Books (January, 1976)
Author: William Hatcher. Davis
Average review score:

Great guy, great book
After having him as a professor twice, I decided I liked his style of teaching well enough to take a look at his books. The Freewill Question is a great book arguing against Determinism. I really like it for several reasons. First, the opposing view (Determinism) is really given equal time in the book, and thus Dr. Davis' argument is all the more convincing. Second, the book is not simply some theory on the Free Will v. Determinism debate, but also an in depth review of the debate, starting in ancient philosophy and moving to 20th C. Third, Davis' writing style is very accessible, and therefore made it possible for me to read this book in one sitting. That to me is the hallmark of a good book.
